Breast Implant Myth: Will My Breast Implant Explode when I am on a Plane?
In the past years, there have been various horror stories of women having their breast implant explode on a plane ride. These various accounts lead many to ask if there’s a correlation between the altitude of air flights and exploding breast implants.
To get straight to the point, the answer is NO. Despite the various reported cases, aeroplane flights do not have anything to do with implants exploding. It is more likely that there are already impending signs of the implant exploding (e.g. capsular contracture), and it just so happened that the pressure in the plane became the last straw for the rupture to happen.
If you have undergone breast augmentation or planning to have implants, it shouldn’t hinder you from traveling or to continue on your daily routine in general. With that said, there are things you need to consider to decrease the possibility of having your breast implants explode.
First, you should make sure that you have fully healed from your operation before getting on board a plane. The bare minimum time after surgery that you can wait is 24 hours. However, many experts advise breast surgery patients to wait at least two days to two weeks before flying. If you have had your surgery done overseas, make sure to have a period between your surgery and flight home. It assures that your body is healing like it’s supposed to and lower the chances of infection or complication.
A reason why women fear their breast implants exploding is because of the pressure inside the plane. Aeroplanes are pressurized and the air inside the cabin differs when you’re on the ground. As we established, it doesn’t automatically result in a rupture.
Women with implants usually experience tightness in the breast area during a flight. It’s the result of air pockets within the implant that reacts to the pressure inside the plane. This is correlated more to saline implants, as the saline solution gives way for more air pockets in the implant. However, high-quality breast implants can withstand air pressure without exploding. The tightness usually subsides after the flight. If you are a jet-setter, consider this factor when selecting your implants.
Still, pay close attention to your body during the trip. Aeroplane travel is known to increase the risk of a blood clot in the legs. As it is invasive, breast augmentation affects your blood flow, increasing the risk of a blood clot, especially during the earlier parts of the recovery stage. Stay hydrated throughout the trip and have your prescription medication in hand just in case. If it’s a long flight, walk around the cabin a few times to keep the blood circulating.
Also, have someone to assist you through your trip, especially right after your surgery. Do not lift or pull heavy bags. Remind yourself to not exert your body too much.
If you have had the implants for quite a while now, there’s nothing wrong with consulting with your doctor before flying. If you feel that there’s something wrong with your implants, run through with your surgeon first. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
Motiva® Implants for Women On the Go
Even if aeroplane flights don’t cause breast implants to explode, it doesn’t mean you should take your safety lightly. We touched on how the right implants can put you at ease from any possible discomfort, especially when travelling. A perfect brand for women who are always on the go is Motiva®.
Motiva® Implants are filled with a silicone gel, called Progressive Gel™, that makes the implant 100% filled. The balanced gel elasticity, firmness, and fullness prevent the formation of air pockets inside the implant. Also, the high-level of viscosity of the Progressive Gel™ prevents the silicone gel from travelling to other parts of the body if ever rupture happens.
Holding the gel inside is Motiva®’s high-quality implant shell. Motiva® has a TrueMonobloc® configuration that links all implant components (gel, shell, and patch) to a unified structure. It results in an implant with equal tensile strength. It improves the implants’ resistance to physical pressure, without rupturing.
In a 6-year prospective study, breast augmentation surgeries with Motiva® Implants show only less than 1% of capsular contracture and implant rupture. Furthermore, Motiva® assures your safety not only with its implant features but also with their reliable warranty program.
All Motiva® Breast Implants are covered by the Always Confident Warranty®, which covers cases of rupture for the lifetime of the implant. It also comes with the Product Replacement Policy, covering cases of capsular contracture Baker Grades III and IV, covering a 10-year period.
So, if you’re worried about your breast implants exploding, you may now consider it a myth. Also, with reliable implants on your side, you have nothing to worry about.
